The Things People Say Thursday: Culture Shock

An American woman confiding in her French friend about her adjustment in France:

"To be honest, I didn't know what was going on. Men on the street would grunt or groan or give a slow hiss as they passed me shoulder to shoulder. At first I thought, 'Is something wrong? Is he in pain?'

And then I realized: they were flirting!"

Ah yes, seduction has many faces...and sounds!

I found it highly disturbing when living in England that apparently it was the women who were supposed to be hitting on the men there! Or at least that's how it looked to one confused American.

Red Shoes,
Well whatever the response, it seems it wouldn't be pretty, huh? I found it as confusing (and frankly, I still find it weird) as this quoted woman. When I mentioned it to a French male friend, he smiled and said, "You should feel flattered!" I guess I'm not there yet.

Life,
Interesting! That explains a lot! I find the single British women I meet here to be quite forward with men. Thanks for sharing your experience. I'll now chalk it up to a cultural difference rather than desperation!

Nice to see you both!
